Summary

5 stars…。 I think? Not sure how to feel about how much of myself I see in Frances, particularly in regards to her flaws, which are apparently my own as well。

Ha, “conversations” with “friends,” I get it 🤪 (3。5-4?)

I love Sally Rooney。 This book is my favourite of hers so far。 The characters were so human and real that I grew attached to them even if they committed mistakes, and related to them in the good parts and the bad。 They made me feel seen and understood, and not alone。 Specifically Frances。 The relationships were incredibly real and modern as well, not the typical perfect love story。 I absolutely recommend。 Amazing book。

How this(!) novel catapulted Sally Rooney to all that fame is beyond me。 It is boring in a way that eludes description。 Painful, excruciating boredom that begets indifference but not quite rage。 I tried reading this one when it was out, but I was bored then too。 I read Normal People when it came out and had the exact same reaction。 But after watching that stunning show I gave the book a chance and quite liked it。 It's one of the best literary adaptations I've seen where the show transcends the s How this(!) novel catapulted Sally Rooney to all that fame is beyond me。 It is boring in a way that eludes description。 Painful, excruciating boredom that begets indifference but not quite rage。 I tried reading this one when it was out, but I was bored then too。 I read Normal People when it came out and had the exact same reaction。 But after watching that stunning show I gave the book a chance and quite liked it。 It's one of the best literary adaptations I've seen where the show transcends the source material。 The same is true for the show Conversations with Friends。 The cast is not as perfect as that of Normal People but they do the job。 I was sympathetic to the characters and I liked the story。 So it was reasonable for me to expect to like the book after watching the show。In the first few chapters I did like the book。 It was quite shocking to read the complete story from the perspective of Frances - who has so little to say in the show。 The attraction between Frances and Nick is more obvious in the book。 Reading the book after watching the show, I felt wise, cosy under the wings of my knowledge of what's about to transpire, paying greater attention to the characters' emotions and the motivations behind their actions。 I was comparing the book to the show and noticing what was chopped on the writer's table。 But soon, a switch flipped and the words became stiff and the characters became insufferable。 I couldn't stand inane Frances or the passive AF Nick。 It was more interesting to look outside of the window during my train ride to work than drudge through this novel。 So I decided to abandon this book alongside the hopes of reading her third novel。 I will watch the show based on it though, born perfect out of some peculiar magic with her novels。 。。。more

Gosh Sally Rooney is so talented。 Frances is insufferable, but her damaged characterization portrays her bitterness so perfectly。 Per usual, just a really beautiful exploration of fucked up people。 4。5!

I wish I could give this ZERO stars。 I hated this book。 I debated stopping, but was hoping it would get better。 A quad of whiney confused sexually hollow people interacting with one another in various duos。

Rooney is good with language but I felt that her characters were a bit underdeveloped。 And there was a bit of queerbaiting that actually contributed to that。 She has a distinctive, readable, smooth language and I like reading about her portrayal of modern-day relationships/

Would be giving 5 stars if they had cast Bobbi as Frances in TV adaptation

My rating for this got a little lower as the book went on, I started to lose interest around 2/3 of the way in, however I enjoyed the writing style and found it very easy to read so I soldiered on, also want to watch the tv series so thought I may as well get it done。 Not a lot really happens although it still managed to keep my attention for the most part? Unsure how I feel about this one。 I really enjoy sally Rooneys writing style and the beauty in how she sees the world。 But the characters in this all just kinda sucked。 None of them were compelling at all or even good people so I was kind of glad to be done with this one。

I liked Normal People better, but still。 It's pretty obvious that Sally Rooney is a once-in-a-generation talent when it comes to writing flawed, annoying, realistic people, and making you care about them。 I liked Normal People better, but still。 It's pretty obvious that Sally Rooney is a once-in-a-generation talent when it comes to writing flawed, annoying, realistic people, and making you care about them。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Wow! This was such an insanely well written book! The plot would have felt like a bit of a slog if Sally Rooney wasn't such a good writer and let the reader inside Frances' head。 Every character was so realistic and well written and while no one in this book was a really "good" person, they were so interesting to follow。 I loved Frances' church epiphany about how to love people and her attempts to be the version of herself she wishes she was, and then the immediate relapse back into Nick's arms。 Wow! Although it was hard for me to get into this book, it grasped me by the neck 60 pages in, and forced me to indulge in it。 It’s intimate, and charmingly intellectual。 I found myself relating to Frances, and Nick。 Their characters surely bloomed throughout the story, as did Melissa and Bobbi’s。

My first Salley Rooney book! I think I liked this book more as I was reading it, and less after I’d finished it, and possibly even LESS after reading ‘Beautiful World, Where Are You', which was just so good。 I didn’t even intend to buy this book, but I felt really compelled & intrigued by the characters at the point in the book I was at when I had to leave the cafe I was reading at。 I also love the title, I think I’d read any book titled ‘Conversations with Friends。’ The main character is suppos My first Salley Rooney book! (definitely not the worst thing I’ve read and I’ve read a lot of bad romance (ra ra oo la la la) I kept reading this book because I simply could not get a grip on what I thought about the characters and I was determined to get to the bottom of it all and by the end I was just as confused。 I can kind of understand if the point is “these people are neither good nor bad” but I was stuck at “do I like/trust you or not” which is more uncomfortable to me I think。 My instant favorite quote was “Except in the sense of enriching my life, Bobbi didn’t help me write the poetry。” However in the end, I don’t really know if Bobbi is deserving of this beautiful sentiment… 。。。more

i’ll be honest, i think i enjoyed it a lot because i watched the show first and i loved comparing the two。 there’s a lot i liked about the book vs the movie, like how you can actually tell what she’s feeling in description。 but a lot of the scenes were short and rushed, whereas the movie did a good job of playing everything out。 overall, good plot line and it was interesting the entire time :)
